Are you interested in testing your dog's public access skills and having the opportunity to earn an AKC CGC title? Then this is for you! In honor of the opening of our new facility, we will be offering a free Canine Good Citizen Examination. Before registering, please read the AKC guidelines for the exam https://www.akc.org/products-services/training-programs/canine-good-citizen/.
Any dog over the age of 6 months can take the CGC test. Your dog does not have to be AKC registered. Your dog must pass all 10 testing items (i.e., earn a 100%) on the exam to pass. Please note that you may not use treats during the exam. If your dog successfully completes 9/10 items, and if time allows, you will have one opportunity to redo the single testing item.
Please note that this event is not appropriate for dogs with behavior concerns (i.e., fear, reactivity, aggression etc.).
Scent Work is a fun and rewarding sport for dogs of all ages, breeds, and abilities! It builds confidence, focus, and teamwork while giving dogs an opportunity to use their natural scenting abilities.
Unlike traditional methods that pair food with odor, this course uses backchaining, a proven training technique used in professional detection dog programs. This approach works well for dogs of all personalities, from shy or easily distracted to highly driven.
You'll learn the fundamentals of scent detection, proper odor handling, equipment use, hide placement, and odor obedience. Our goal is to develop confident, enthusiastic searchers while building a strong foundation for recreational Scent Work or future competition, including preparation for the Odor Recognition Test (ORT).
