Temperament Evaluation: Behavior Checklist and GDBart Testing
At Woofability Service Dogs, we use a structured and validated approach to assess the suitability...At Woofability Service Dogs, we use a structured and validated approach to assess the suitability of dogs for service work.
Our evaluations combine:
• The Behavior Checklist (BCL): A behaviour scoring system developed by Dr. James Serpell (University of Pennsylvania) in partnership with guide dog organizations such as The Seeing Eye and Guiding Eyes for the Blind. The BCL measures key traits for service dog success and provides consistent, objective data.
• The Guide Dog Behavior and Assessment Research Test (GDBart): A standardized test exposing dogs to various common stimuli (surfaces, stairs, vacuums, other dogs) in a consistent environment to fairly assess responses.
Using these tools together gives a clear, research-based picture of each dog’s temperament, helping set a strong foundation for service dog training and placement.
